Job fair to help laid off Wells workers | News, Sports, Jobs

Chautauqua County is trying to help workers who are being laid off from a local ice cream plant find new employment.

Wells Enterprises is expected to lay off 319 workers by the end of the year. The Iowa-based Wells confirmed in July that it planned to scale-back operations next year by reducing its production lines from about 20 to five. At the time, the company said it would continue normal operations at the Dunkirk plant—located at 1 Ice Cream Dr.—for the remainder of this year.

On Tuesday, Mark Geise, Chautauqua County Industrial Development Agency director and chief executive officer, told IDA board members that there will be a job fair on Dec. 1 at JCC North in Dunkirk, from 3-5 pm The event is aimed to help those who are being laid off.

“There are 22 businesses that have been invited to that (job fair), to talk to these displaced workers. Hopefully they can get slotted into currently open positions,” he said.

Geise said they’re also helping those workers who will be laid off in different ways, including getting them ready for the job fair.

“We’ve worked really hard with the Department of Labor and the Workforce Investment Board to help them understand what their benefits are, what they can expect in terms of health insurance … and also to help them create resumes or tune up resumes if they already have it,” he said.

According to Chautauqua Works’ website, businesses that are expected to be in attendance at the job fair include: Blackstone-Ney Ultrasonics (CTG-Cleaning Technologies Group), Brooks-TLC, Chautauqua Opportunities Inc., Cummins, Jamestown Engine Plant, Custom Trades Staffing, Lactalis American Group, Manpower, NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, Nestle Purina Pet Care, Refresco, Rosina Food Products, Sealing Devices, Universal Stainless Steel, Upstate Niagara Cooperative, and US Foods.

Job openings for attending business include: CDL A Driver, Direct Support Assistant, Engineering Manager, Environmental Services, Field Service Technician, Food Service, General laborer, Industrial Cleaner, Machine Builder, Machine Operator, Maintenance, Mechanic, Mechanical Design Engineer, Packaging Machine Operator, Picker/Packer, Production Operator, Project Manager, Quality Control, Supervisor, and Warehouse Selector.

Jamestown Community College North Training Center is located at 10785 Bennett Road, Dunkirk. The job fair will be in rooms 117, 118 and 119.
